Adolescence is a particularly important and challenging time for developing long lasting romantic relationship patterns. However, limited empirical research has explored teen perceptions of ideal partner characteristics during adolescence or their significance to the quality of current and future relationships. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 33 African American high school girls to shed light on the qualities desired in their dating relationships and relational factors that influence teen dating behaviors.
Girls discussed the important influence of parents in choosing a partner and provided positive depictions of friendship and marriage with a suitable partner. More research is needed to understand how and why adolescents desire particular characteristics, how socialization shapes teen perceptions and how these preferences may be related to current and future adolescent dating choices, including violence perpetration and victimization.

In the last month, the Black Lives Matter movement has reached a marvellous and unignorable fever pitch. Millions fill the streets. Calls grow daily to defund police departments across America. Statues of brutal slavers and colonisers such as Colston and Rhodes are being torn down. People are marching to affirm the sanctity of Black trans lives in New York. Abolitionist politics have entered common parlance. The UK, too, is reckoning with the historic and present injustices in a country built on the exploitation and dehumanisation of Black people.
Insurrection is the welcome mood of the hour. The Overton window has shifted and through it we can see a future where all Black lives, no matter their gender , class or creed, matter. This significant moment has also overlapped with Pride season and brands everywhere are making gestures and taking action to signal their progressive sensitivities both towards BLM and LGBT people, often in an attempt to avoid harming their bottom lines.

Black females begin to outnumber black males by age 16, Judice writes, partly as a result of high mortality and incarceration rates that Judice said result from systematic discrimination against black males. Black men are also twice as likely as black women to marry outside their race, she writes. Black women are, in fact, the least likely group of women to marry outside their race.
Judice first became interested in the topic after spending time with black families around her in Evanston and nearby North Shore communities. As children and teens, the girls and the boys often hung out with groups that were racially and ethnically diverse. By their late 20s and early 30s, she writes, most of them had graduated from college and started their careers.
