Anna Weih , Opinion Editor December 22, As a senior in high school, I have had my fair share of time to observe and experience high school relationships first hand. After dating a few boys my freshman and sophomore year, I have come to the realization that high school relationships are taken way too seriously. Many people get caught up in the initial romance and love the constant attention. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. I abandoned all of my friends. When my boyfriend and I broke up, I was left with no one but my mom and dog. At first, I thought my world was literally ending, as if the the sun would stop shining and the world would stop turning just because my relationship ended.
Are Christian Women Taking Dating Too Seriously?
I was sitting at a local happy hour, sipping wine with a friend. Young and recently out of a relationship, my friend has never casually dated. Her previous serious beaus all blossomed from friendships. As the pinot flowed, she divulged that a strikingly handsome stranger had approached her in a bar, offered a stellar pickup line and his number, and she was hesitant on how to proceed. When I was young and newly dating, I treated each date as if he were a possible future husband.
I have decided to stop online dating. Neal is one of out of three dudes I last met there. Sigh well, it takes two to tango. I’m not blaming.
I remember a few weeks ago I met with a member of our church who wanted to grab coffee and “catch up. I suspected this because this is usually why young Christian guys want to meet with their pastor. So while we met I asked what’s new in life and sure enough he replied, “Well, there’s this girl What was interesting though was that he started asking questions that a lot of young Christians tend to ask when they’re thinking about dating.
Before I explain myself, let me quickly explain the context of Christianity and dating. Dating is a fairly new relational category that began around the 20th century. So ever since its inception, younger folks were constantly hooking-up, shacking-up and breaking-up. This was obviously disconcerting to Christian leaders, but they knew “dating” was here to stay. So rather than reject dating, Christians tried to redefine it. Perhaps the most influential attempt is seen in Joshua Harris’s book I Kissed Dating Goodbye where he rallied Christians to redefine dating as “courtship” i.
This was a needed word at the time and after the book came out, many individuals who read it felt convicted to end their dating relationships – including my wife back when she was dating another guy in high school. So I guess I should thank Josh Harris for that. But as a result, Christians have now created a culture where dating should be taken very seriously.
